Subject: Re[2]: Compile Question

     Hi,

     My final word on this:

First, thanks for your comments. I always like to hear from the other
side of the fence. I would have replied privately, but I don't have
     the email address.

You seem to think that id is making the game out of the goodness of
their heart. Hardly, its all about money. The reason we can do what we
can do is because id knows people will buy it. If Doom hadn't been the
success it was, I seriously doubt that we would be able to do what we
can do today. If you couldn't build add-ons for Quake would you buy
     it? Probably not.

Second, I can tell you don't know the software industry very well. I
remember when Lotus 123 was THE spreadsheet software and now I mostly
see Excel in my clients sites. Why? Simply because Lotus didn't see
that Windows would be the platform of choice. I could go for pages
with examples like that. Remember, Atari or Commodore? Hell, even the
Mac is barely hanging on because they refuse to allow clones.

Have you noticed the new game software on the shelf? Many now have
built in editors in them. Gee, wonder why?

As a matter of fact, I am grateful. I appreciate what id has done. To
me they are the Microsoft of the game industry. They will go down in
history as a company that revolutionized the games software industry.

I think its great that they allow third-parties to build editors, et
all, for their games. But what happens when EVERYONE is doing that?
Where will id be then? Look at how many other 3D games are coming out.
Have you seen Half-Life? Its a Quake 1 (I believe) engine that looks
as good as any Quake 2 screenshots I have seen.

For me, this is all just a hobby, so I could care less, one way or the
other. The only reason I bought Quake 2 was to play the add-ons that
will be coming out like HacX, etc, and because I enjoy creating maps.

Do the guys at id care whether I bring this up? Yeah, they are really
worried about it when they fill out their deposit slip at the
drive-thru sitting in their Ferraris. :) Hell, they probably don't
have to work another day in any of their respective lives.

The fact of the software industry is simple: You either innovate or
you get lost on the shelf. I simply bring up a business strategy that
I see other companies starting to do. Blizzard started the top-down
strategy games and now you can't even find them on the shelf for all
the other look-alike games. That's why their new games is an adventure
     based game.

Let me say this too. The reason I registered Qoole was that it was the
only editor that offered so much in the package. And every day I am
reminded what a good job the guys are doing on it. They are proactive
and responsive and I will send in my money on version 3.0 when it
comes out on its CD without hesitation.

Lets do an experiment: You save these messages and keep them and in a
year and we'll see what happens then. Will id be a leader or just one
tree in the forest? I hope they are a leader.

BTW, I promise. No more on this subject. Back to editing.
