In fact, I did this last night (added a platform) to a simple map, and
all I did was put the platform where it should top out.  Looked at the
"Y" value in the "side 2d map", then moved the mouse to the bottom
of the shaft and looked at the "Y" value again.

I then calculated the distance by subtracting the two numbers, (careful
of this sign of the bottom number, it can be negative).  

Voila, that's the distance to move.  Worked first time, no problems,
there's a very small gap at the bottom, but I can easily tweak that
out.
