If your hard drive is rattling away during the freezes, then it's
probably Windows reorganising the memory and dumping stuff like the
desktop information onto the hard disk.

DOS and GL games are likely to suffer from this because Windows has no
way of knowing that they're games. I don't get this crap from any of the
Exclusive Mode DirectX games in my collection -- if the memory's too
fragged, the defragging happens while the game starts up. It makes the
start-up slower, but when it's finished, I don't get freezes.

(Crashes, yes[1]. Freezes, no.)

[1] (But only with Carmageddon. Due, I suspect, to its having been bought by an
unsuspecting friend in Hong Kong and being the only silver CD I've ever seen
without a label. Not sure if ELSPA covers Hong Kong, though...)
