Kalashnykov was the designer and he based the AK-47 on an extremely rare WW2
German assault rifle called the STG44. The STG44 is considered to be the
first assault rifle ever designed. The STG44 design (stamped steel) heaviliy
influenced most of the Heckler & Koch designs also. But Heckler and Koch
chose to utilize the rolller lock delay of the MG-42 in virtually every
firearm they have produced to date. One note of info that is kind off
interesting. The AK-47 or one of it's variants has been produced in more
numbers than any other hand held weapon which fires a fixed cartrige.
Estimates of total production by more than 100 countries is in excess of 1
Billion.
