The gun in Predator is a real gun.  The XM-1xx somethin-or-other.  It 
fires 5.56mm rounds at some ungodly rate, 1000/sec. or something.  It's 
basically useless though.  In order to tote around enough ammo for it 
you'd need a truck, and if you had a truck you could just put a real gun 
on it like .50 cal or M240G.  

Also, I don't think it was actually desined by the military, but some gun 
nut...  read about it in Guns & Ammo (I think) a couple years back.  They 
had a cool picture where this guy had THREE of them linked in tandem, in 
a triangle shape.... talk about SPRAY AND PRAY!
